A typical observation had been that prisoners who became indebted to other people, typically as a consequence of medication practices or gambling losings, and/or that has not a lot of cash to get commodities they desired, would provide “sexual favours” instead of re re payment or in substitution for “canteen”.
Other interviewees had seen vulnerable people, who have been socially separated and lacked external economic help, being targeted or “groomed” for sex. During these circumstances, it’s very problematic to explain the sexual intercourse as truly consensual, given that it was just provided being a commercial trade.
Three male interviewees disclosed which they have been raped in jail, by prisoners. Three other people was indeed threatened with rape by other prisoners.
